Gender differences in lifespan and mortality rates in two seed beetle species
نویسنده
چکیده
1. In most animals, females live longer than males, and large individuals live longer than small individuals. We examine both gender and body size effects on adult lifespan in two species of seed beetles ( Callosobruchus maculatus and Stator limbatus ), and test whether body size differences between males and females can explain genderdifferences in mortality rates and lifespan. 2. In both species, the effect of age on mortality rate was best described by a logistic mortality curve. C. maculatus females have a higher initial mortality rate than males, while males have a much higher rate of increase of the mortality rate with increasing age. In contrast, S. limbatus males had a higher initial mortality rate (opposite to the pattern seen in C. maculatus ) but males and females did not differ in the rate of increase of mortality with increasing age. 3. Body size was positively correlated with lifespan in both species, but it explained very little of the variance in lifespan ( R 2 < 0·09 for both species) and did not explain the gender difference. 4. Lifespan was heritable for both genders of both populations ( h 2 between 0·19 and 0·55), and the shape of the mortality curves varied among families within both species.

Complex genetic architecture of population differences in adult lifespan of a beetle: nonadditive inheritance, gender differences, body size and a large maternal effect.
Evolutionary responses to selection can be complicated when there is substantial nonadditivity, which limits our ability to extrapolate from simple models of selection to population differentiation and speciation. Studies of Drosophila melanogaster indicate that lifespan and the rate of senescence are influenced by many genes that have environment- and sex-specific effects. These studies also d...
متن کاملThe genetic architecture of life span and mortality rates: gender and species differences in inbreeding load of two seed-feeding beetles.
We examine the inbreeding load for adult life span and mortality rates of two seed beetle species, Callosobruchus maculatus and Stator limbatus. Inbreeding load differs substantially between males and females in both study populations of C. maculatus--life span of inbred females was 9-13% shorter than the life span of outbred females, whereas the life span of inbred males did not differ from th...
متن کاملMaternal age affects offspring lifespan of the seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus
1. Offspring from older parents often have shorter adult lifespans than offspring of younger mothers. We examine the effects of offspring genotype, maternal age and paternal age on offspring survival, development and adult lifespan in the seed beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus . 2. Females took about a quarter of a day longer to develop from an egg to an adult and lived ≈ 7 days longer than male...

In order to determine the optimum rate of Vigna sun-hum seed sowing for rangeland rehabilitation in sandy soil of North Kordofan, Sudan, two trials were conducted separately under managed and unmanaged conditions at El-obeid Agricultural Research Farm in Sheikan locality of North Kordofan State in 2015 and 2016. Seed rates were 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 Kg/feddan (4200m) and arranged by a Completely Ran...

The life history of Enochrus quadripunctatus Herbst was studied in the laboratory. The duration of each developmental stage, larval behavior, and preimaginal mortality rate were determined. It takes the insect a total of 43 days from hatching to reach the adult stage, with a high mortality rate in the first stadium. The mortality rate decreases as the beetle passes through the immature sta...
